You say you have three girls right? My daughter is 4 years old and I have noticed that she is increasingly harder to deal with. I have heard of the terrible two’s but I can’t really explain this behavior. If I say “no”, for any reason, she screams! Screams her head off, and I am finding myself screaming right back at her. I don’t want to be this kind of mother, but I feel so upset! I miss my happy little chubby baby.
Take a deep breath! Right now, it’s completely normal for you to feel as though you can’t control your emotions when you feel that your daughter is acting in a way you don’t understand.
First things first, cut yourself some slack. You will not always be able to control how she responds… but you can always control how YOU respond. Take a moment to let her know that this behavior not only won’t be tolerated but it will get no response from you. Her feelings are important, and your willing to listen, only if she tells you them in a calm way.
Also, try to re-direct her attention. Tell her to sing you her very best song, ask her questions that have nothing to do with the topic, and if you do feel yourself getting to that point, put yourself on time out. I know this sounds crazy, but honestly you have to be able to remove yourself from the situation to be able to move forward. There have been times that I have literally pulled over my car, got out, and just took a few deep breaths. It is OK to admit to yourself, "Hey I can't handle this right now."
Once you fly off the handle, not only has your child gotten a rise out of you, whatever you may say, you can’t take it back. This is where we must be very careful. Our daughters will not always remember every wonderful thing that you ever said to her, but the things we say out of anger… they last.
In the meantime, encourage silly and never forget that these days will pass just like the terrible two’s did! Hope this helps.
